Key Senate votes for the 2012 farm bill

Here's how the U.S. Senate voted on EWG's priority and high profile amendments. Five of the 6 amendments passed and are now part of the farm bill that passed the Senate. The Gillibrand amendment, which would have restored the cuts to nutrition assistance for the most vulnerable among us, was rejected by a vote of 66 to 33.

  • Sen. Gillibrand #2156 — Would have trimmed the generous taxpayer subsidies to the crop insurance industry and used that money to restore the $4.5 billion cut to SNAP and to expand the fresh fruit and vegetable snack program in schools.
  • Sen. Chambliss #2438 — Requires farmers receiving generous taxpayer subsidized crop insurance premiums to practice basic conservation requirements including reducing erosion and not draining wetlands.
  • Sens. Durbin and Coburn #2439 — Reduces the taxpayer subsidy for crop insurance premiums to wealthy farmers making more than $750,000 annually.
  • Sen. Grassley #2167 — Places a limit of $75,000 on one type of subsidy known as marketing loan gains.
  • Sen. Brown (OH) #2445 — Restores funding for rural development programs that support local farms and small businesses.
  • Sen. Merkley #2382 — Ensures organic farmers receive a fair deal when they buy federal crop insurance.
